At our meetings, we discuss classic and lesser-known novels from the 1920s-1950s, taking turns to choose from a previously compiled booklist. Most of our books are available in the Islington libraries. Our interesting discussions lead us to a wide range of topics relating to the period and social context of the chosen novel. We note how language and perspectives on society have changed but equally how the themes of these novels are as relevant today as they were nearly a century ago. Books read include: The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnin (1922); National Velvet by Enid Bagnold (1935); Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton (1948) and A Legacy by Sybille Bedford (1953).
