Art in London is a lively Islington u3a visual arts group with around 130 members. We visit a wide range of exhibitions, museums and galleries across Greater London, with trips generally organised by our Group Coordinator, Pia Rainey. Each visit typically attracts about six to twelve members — a friendly number for exploring and discussing artworks together. We also meet for a chat before entering exhibitions, supporting the Group’s strong social side. Visits are published in an illustrated monthly e-newsletter, sent to all registered members of the Group. Here you will find details of exhibition entry times and meet up points. Members book their own tickets, and suggestions or offers to host events are warmly welcomed. Please see below for upcoming outings, and contact Pia by clicking the email link above if you are interested in joining our Group.

LOST AMSTERDAM: PORTRAITS OF A VANISHED WORLD
Date and time: Thursday 21 May, 19.00-20.30. Open to all
A talk presented by Christie’s Restitution team, tells the stories of eight Jewish collectors and dealers, from Dutch natives such as the Lierens family to German refugees like the Semmels and Hirschlands, who arrived in Amsterdam after the Nazis rose to power. They lost not only their works of art, but in many cases, their lives.

EARLY NETHERLANDISH DRAWINGS
Date: Tuesday 2 June
Featuring around 120 works by artists including Rogier van der Weyden, Lucas van Leyden, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Hendrick Goltzius, this exhibition charts the development of drawing in the Low Countries (present-day Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands) before 1600. The exceptional breadth and quality of the British Museum's holdings provides a unique opportunity to present a comprehensive account of drawing from this region.
Place: British Museum, exhibition room 90. Tickets: FREE and no need to book
ZURBARÁN
Date: Monday 15 June
Francisco de Zurbarán was one of the great painters of 17th-century Seville. His vivid paintings burst with naturalism and convey intense spiritual experiences. Renowned as a painter of fabrics, Zurbarán represented extravagant clothing as well as the austere robes of monks with unsurpassed skill. Ordinary items – a ceramic vessel, a wicker basket, a rose – bring his extraordinary subjects also closer to everyday life.
Place: National Gallery
HURVIN ANDERSON
Date: Tuesday 30 June
Through colour-drenched landscapes and interiors, Anderson, British but of Jamaican heritage, meanders back and forth across the Atlantic, between the UK and the Caribbean. His works often feature family members, experiences from his youth and places of individual and cultural significance. He employs a profoundly atmospheric composition to explore the markers of identity and shows a deep-rooted engagement with the traditions of British landscape painting.
Place: Tate Britain
